"Your life is yours—no one else's. Don't let the expectations of family, friends, or society dictate your path."
I studied a Degree in Genetics and truly loved it. However, when I realized that most opportunities in the field entailed long hours in a laboratory working by yourself, sometimes even in precarious conditions, I knew it wasn't the best fit for me. I've always believed that my work should reflect who I am.
In 2018, during my final year in Australia, I was still studying Genetics, but deep down, I knew I wanted to shift towards Business to feel closer to making a real-world impact. When the opportunity arose to choose an elective, I was drawn to Risk Management. I had no idea what to expect, but I was eager to explore. And I loved it! That was the turning point. I shifted my focus from Genetics to Management, specifically Project Management. The key was self-awareness—recognizing my strengths and weaknesses made it clear that I would be great at it!
After making this decision, I pursued a Master's Degree in Project Management. During my studies, I interned in an Innovation Department, which led to a more permanent role as an Innovation Technician. But my goal remained clear—I was determined to be a Project Manager. A few months later, I discovered a Project Manager position on LinkedIn. The salary was lower than I had hoped, but that didn't detain me. That was the career I sought, and I saw it as an investment in my long-term growth.
I gained valuable experience, but I still longed for an international environment. This desire led me to the start-up sector, where I learned a great deal. However, I was still seeking a stronger focus on health until I found my current role. I've now spent two years working as a Project Manager in the digital health sector, and I've never been more fulfilled.
Overcoming the expectations of family and society to pursue a career path that didn't follow a traditional trajectory, and finding the courage to leave a secure position for an uncertain future.
Successfully transitioned from genetics to project management in the digital health sector, leading innovation initiatives and proving that career pivots can lead to greater fulfillment and impact.
